2023 kitchen trends forecasted by Smile Kitchens
Dawn Filkins, Head of Creative at Smile Kitchens reveals some of the trends that could hit the market in 2023.
Warm neutrals inspired by nature
“If Wild Wonder, the Dulux Colour of the Year for 2023 has predicted anything, it’s that we are now going to see a shift toward warmer, more neutral tones. The comforting blend of a soft, neutral palette enables homeowners to encapsulate the serenity of the natural world in their homes. Paired with natural wooden effects, plenty of light and carefully chosen pops of colour, a soft, yellow toned green like our Eden is the perfect choice to embrace this trend.”
The (continued) rise of Japandi
“According to the trends experts at Houzz, searches for ‘Japandi Kitchens’ rose by 104% in 2022. This functional, minimalist design is born from the combination of Japanese and Scandinavian aesthetics. Defined by natural materials, mixing multiple textures and a focus on organisational elements, the Japandi style is easy to achieve and even easier to use day to day. Open shelving to display functional and aesthetic items is a great way to incorporate this trend into your existing kitchen or a new one.”
Mixed Metals
“We have seen huge demand from customers for brass, gold, copper and other coloured metals that veer away from standard chrome. From introducing a flash of colour handles right through to full, hammered copper splashbacks we expect to see more customers embracing the smooth, tactile coolness of metal. What’s great about metals is that they work in both modern and traditional kitchens; with neutrals and with colour.”
Statement lighting in the kitchen
“Customers are increasingly beginning to consider lighting as a part of their overall kitchen design. We’ve seen many requests for statement pieces such as chandeliers or pendant lighting fixtures, offering a brilliant way to bring the homeowner’s personality and style into a space in a unique way. With the rise in broken plan living, lighting also offers an effective way to break up different zones of the home as the lighting changes between areas.”
Secret food storage
“We’re not just talking standard cupboard space here. In 2023 storage is going to up its game. Think huge, hidden pantries, floor to ceiling pull out larders and even clever corner optimisers. The rise of ‘organisation’ inspiration on social media has sparked huge demand for an area dedicated to organising ingredients and providing a space where everything is accessible for quick meals, busy schedules, and impromptu hosting.”
VR kitchen shopping
“Consumers have become more empowered over the last three years to manage their own renovations which has seen a surge in self-sourcing from multiple retailers, brands, and designers for their kitchen. Smile Kitchens embraces this as a fully virtual company that offers start to finish support, guidance, design, and inspiration when it comes to the kitchen. Since its launch in 2020, it has served the new wave of consumers who want to do things from the comfort of their own home by introducing digital consultations, ‘showroom in a box’ packages and even VR walk throughs of a kitchen design.”
